Violette Malan

Violette Malan has a PhD from York University in 18th-Century English Literature, and has found it to be more useful than she expected. Born in Canada, Violette’s cultural background is Spanish. She cooks Spanish food, drinks Spanish wine, and listens to (among other things) Spanish music.

She started reading fantasy and science fiction at the age of eight, and was writing stories not long after. On occasion she’s worked as an administrative assistant, and a carpenter’s helper. Her most unusual job was translating letters between lovers, one of whom spoke only English, the other only Spanish.

Her short fantasy fiction has been published in the anthologies of ZNB Press, and in the magazine “Tales from the Magician’s Skull.” She is also the author of nine fantasy novels published by DAW Books Inc., including the high-fantasy Dhulyn and Parno series under Violette Malan and the Faraman Prophecy series under V. M. Escalada.

The Godstone Series

The Godstone (#1)
"Malan’s elaborate worldbuilding and nuanced characters help keep the pages turning on the way to the slow-building climax. The unexpected plot twists and a subtle hint of romance will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next installment."

Publishers Weekly

"An original, enigmatic fantasy about reluctant heroes drawn into a quest to save the world."

Kirkus

"What elevates this novel...is the characters and the world."

SF Crowsnest

"Violette Malan’s The Godstone offers a single volume epic fantasy novel that is ostensibly about the fate of a world and a particular artifact that could alter it forever, but dives deeply into personal questions of identity, power, and mental health."

Nerds of a Feather

"Violette Malan’s The Godstone is thoroughly delightful and totally original. Fenra Lowens is a Practitioner of magic who serves as healer for the residents of a small rural village. When Fenra’s longtime patient Arlyn Albainilr eceives a summons to the City to receive the valuable contents of a long-lost relative’s vault, Fenra volunteers to accompany Arlyn on his journey. But Arlynis more than he seems, and he knows more than he tells. Inside the vault is an object of immense power, and he’s the only one who knows how to stop it from destroying the world. There’s a confident briskness to Malan’s pacing; nothing seems to drag over The Godstone’s 300 or so pages. The momentum is only aided by the superb dialogue throughout. Fenra and Arlyn’s banter is so pleasant, so assured, that it at times reads like classic English literature. Readers would be wise to pick up this exciting start to a new fantasy series."

BookPage

Charlaine Harris, NY Times bestselling author of DEAD AND GONE and DEAD IN THE FAMILY

“In THE MIRROR PRINCE, Violette Malan has accomplished that most difficult of fusions–she’s given a complex, high fantasy world a very readable contemporary voice.”

Tanya Huff, author of the Blood Books series

“Malan jumps right into the action. I enjoyed the book a great deal […] Max and Cassandra were fun, and it was interesting to see the relationship between the guardian and Max. Malan even gives us glimpses of “humanity” from the Basilisk Prince, and I always like conflicted characters.”

Jim C. Hines, author of Goblin Quest and Goblin Hero

Shadowlands (#2)
“This is a fabulous urban fantasy sequel to The Mirror Prince […] A strong thriller.”

Alternative Worlds

The Sleeping God (#1)
“Combining classic heroic fantasy with a metaphysical twist, [THE SLEEPING GOD features] abundant swordplay and [a] strong, entertaining partnership.”

Publishers Weekly

“A new series of high fantasy and adventure with a hero and heroine cursed with secrets and blessed with natural and magical talents, wit, and bravery. Libraries interested in series SF may want to get in on the ground floor and add this title to their fantasy collections.”

Library Journal

“The highly talented Dhulyn and Parno are great fun to watch as they wade through their adventures.”

Locus

“I’m giving in to my baser instincts and indulging in a bit of shameless cheerleading. Since I want more books like these. [...] Implausibly competent, fundamentally decent characters kicking ass and taking names, wandering the world and saving it […] well-rounded characters both male and female! Derring-do! Heroic (maybe-not-quite) last stands! Come one, come all….”

Tor.com

“Violette Malan shines with a rich pairing of characters in Dhulyn and Parno […] their relationship is especially well done, with a deapth and realism that is frequently lacking in the depiction of long-term relationships in fantasy.”

Fantasy Literature

“A thoughtful interpretation of the hero’s quest theme […] a slower paced but interesting adventure tale that highlights the importance of tradition and working together toward the common good.”

Monsters Critic

“I can recommend to those who enjoy a good political intrigue fantasy. Malan manages to pull off an intriguing story of politics, love and the fate of the world without being clinched.”

Fantasy Book Spot

“A fun read with a great combination of danger, intrigue, humor, and more. The pace only slows long enough for readers to catch a breath before picking up with more action. Violette Malan’s THE SLEEPING GOD is a great choice for good fantasy reading.”

Wantz Upon a Time

“Another excellent read. It’s science fiction fantasy at its best. There’s a wonderful bit of world-building here, and lots of sword-fighting. There’s love, poison and fully-drawn characters, both good and bad and in-between. Malan’s written a classic fantasy novel that manages to be fresh and compelling. I highly recommend THE SLEEPING GOD.”

Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author

“Malan showed a seamless mastery [and] enviable skill with action and setting.”

Julie Czerneda, author of IN THE COMPANY OF OTHERS

The Soldier King (#2)
“Malan has created an entertaining pair of mercenaries and a world for them to adventure within.”

Sacramento Book Review

“The plot twists and turns with plenty of action, good fun for any fan of S&S adventure.”

Locus

“The capture, escape, and chase sequences are all well done and exciting, but as with similar books by Fritz Leiber, Jennifer Roberson, and Simon R. Green, the real joy in the interplay between the two partners. There are prophetic visions, mysterious personal histories, a search for personal roots, and other peripheral elements to enrich […] and differentiate it from the competition. Easily the best of the author’s three novels to date.”

Critical Mass

“A fun sword and sorcery romp featuring engaging characters and an entertaining, multi-faceted world.
