1/23/08: Please head on over to our query information section. We've updated it a bit to reflect some more ways to help people query a little better, both with regard to JABberwocky as well as in general.
12/10/07: Super-huge JABberwocky congratulations to Brandon Sanderson, who has been selected to write the concluding 12th novel in Robert Jordan's #1-bestselling "Wheel of Time" fantasy series. Brandon wishes more than anything that Robert Jordan had been able to complete the series himself, but we know "A Memory of Light" is entrusted to worthy hands.

1/17/08: We'd like to give a big JABberwocky welcome to Tim Akers, the latest writer to join our fold. His book, HEART OF VERIDON, sold to Solaris. To check out what's up with Tim, you can visit his blog at http://shadoth.blogspot.com/ . Welcome aboard, Tim!
1/17/08: It's something to be said that there's a growing awareness in the underserverd audio market for sf/fantasy. And so it's with great pleasure that we announce Kat Richardson's Greywalker series has been sold to Recorded Books. Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series and Simon Green's Secret Histories will be coming out from Audible. We'll be sure to let you know when there's more to update.
1/17/08: Yet some more fantastic award news. Tobias Buckell's RAGAMUFFIN and a Jim Hines novella ("Sister of the Hedge", 6/06 Realms of Fantasy) are both preliminary Nebula Nominees. The final ballot will be released in February. There are only 13 books in each category battling for the 5 final spots. This also marks Toby's second straight year as a Nebula nominee. Also, Jim Hines' GOBLIN HERO was selected as one of the top books in 2007 by scifichick.com.
1/17/08: GET EM WHILE THEY'RE HOT! Charlaine Harris' ICE COLD GRAVE is 50% off at B&N, Books a Million, and their respective websites. And you can also buy a signed MISTBORN hardcover from Brandon Sanderson's website for only $23.50 (to US addresses) including postage, through the end of January.
1/4/08: Lots of great updates to start the New Year. No need for a huge preamble here, the excitement of these items more than speak for themselves:
Tobias Buckell's RAGAMUFFIN was selected by Caribbean Review of Books as one of their 9 best books of 2007.

11/28/07: On the foreign rights front we've had a stellar year so far. Up to this point we have 120 sales abroad which sets a new agency record! We'd like to send out a huge thanks to our overseas subagents and to our clients for making this happen. It'd have been impossible to do it without you!
11/27/07: Woah! There's been a flood of great things going on with Brandon Sanderson's new YA book, ALCATRAZ VS THE EVIL LIBRARIANS (Scholastic, 2007). To give you a small sample, there was the feature on Nancy Pearl's NPR Morning Show. Then the book was a children's book pick for Book Sense. And just now we're looking at a starred PW review. At this point, what else is left?!?! Plenty. Feel free to check in and keep tabs on this book as we continually update the reviews and rights information. Don't you just get the feeling that there's more around the corner? We sure do!
11/7/07: It's been a busy Fall season full of conventions. Be sure to check out the Travel Page to see what we've been up to. There's also a preview of what is definitely on our plate for 2008, though there will be more to add later on. Maybe we'll see you at one of these, so be sure to stop and say hello!
10/5/07: And yet some more congratulations to Charlaine Harris for her latest Harper Connelly mystery, AN ICE COLD GRAVE. The book landed on the extended NYT bestseller list at #25!!
10/5/07: Mayer Brenner is making copies of his books available for free download from his website: www.mayerbrenner.com. So if you like fantasy, head on over there and check it out!
9/14/07: Congratulations to Charlaine Harris and Toni LP Kelner. Their urban fantasy/cross-genre anthology, MANY BLOOD RETURNS, hit #30 on the extended New York Times bestseller list!
9/10/07: With all of the fantastic news surrounding Tanya Huff and "Blood Ties", we were sure we wouldn't want to forget to mention that SMOKE AND ASHES has been nominated for an Aurora Award (Best Long Form Work in the English Language)! The winner will be announced during V-Con in Vancouver, Canada the weekend of October 19th. Good luck!
9/7/07: JABberwocky's newest client, Peat Brett, is smashing agency records left and right. Not only was he the best first sale in the US, but his books also set record deals in France, Germany, and the UK for the agency. The first book in the "as of yet unnamed" fantasy trilogy has also sold to Japan. We have a feeling this is only the beginning for Peat.
9/4/07: Congrats! to Adam-Troy Castro and co-author Jerry Oltion for winning the Seuin Award for their novella, "The Astronaut from Wyoming". The Seuin was awarded at this year's WorldCon in Yokohama, Japan, and recognizes excellent English science fiction and fantasy translated into the Japanese language. The novella originally appeared in ANALOG in 1999 and was both a Hugo and Nebula finalist. His novel, EMISSARIES FROM THE DEAD, sold to HarperCollins EOS in a two-book deal earlier this year.
8/13/07: I don't know if I should be making this public, but there's now posted a photo of new JABberwocky client, Peat Brett, with Joshua Bilmes and Steve Mancino. It was taken at a rooftop pool party in celebration of Peat's book deal with Del Rey and his wife's belated birthday (Happy Birthday, again, Dani!). Just keep in mind that it's never a good idea to mix pools and alcohol. (Consider yourself warned.)

7/10/07: The announcement is out! Charlaine Harris has won the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Contemporary Paranormal! In May it was announced that Charlaine had also won the award for Best Amateur Sleuth with DEFINITELY DEAD. Congratulations, Charlaine!!!
7/10/07: Congratulations to Toni LP Kelner for winning the Agatha for Best Short Story. Toni has co-edited the anthology MANY BLOODY RETURNS with our own Charlaine Harris and we hope that the anthology and Toni's story within it will be similarly acclaimed next year.
7/10/07: We'd like to congratulate Tanya Huff and Simon Green both of whom have just had their best-ever hardcover launches, with HEART OF VALOR and THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN TORC, respectively.
7/10/07: A big round of applause for Tobias Buckell whose second novel, RAGAMUFFIN, has been receiving a flood of wonderful reviews. You can head on over to Toby's Review Page to check out all of the wonderful praise.
5/24/07: When Joshua got hooked on sf in his teens, one of the most important steps in his initiation was getting an OK from his father to join the SF Book Club. He remembers well the joy of opening his first shipment, with great books like Orson Scott Card's A Planet Called Treason, the Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov, and the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey. So we at JABberwocky are deeply saddened to hear that long-time SFBC editors Ellen Asher and Andrew Wheeler have departed as a result of major restructuring at the club's parent company. When you enter into a profession, you do it with the hopes that it will allow you to meet and know people as wonderful and skilled and talented and enthusiastic and well-versed in institutional memory as the two of them. We welcome incoming SFBC editor Rome Quezada and wish the continued best for the SF Book Club, which we hope will continue to be an important "entry drug" for new generations of sf and fantasy fans, but to us it's not going to be quite the same without these two familiar faces at the helm.
5/17/07: Good news a'brewin! JABberwocky extends a gracious welcome to Jeri Westerson. Steve sold the first book of her Crispin Guest Medieval Mystery Series, VEIL OF LIES, to St. Martin's Press (home of Steven Saylor, PC Doherty, etc). It's a great book with a great home, and best of all, Crispin is a contemporary of Chaucer. Oh boy! :) As things are finalized and websites updated, there will be more to tell and plenty to see. Welcome aboard, Jeri, and make yourself at home. You're part of the Jabberwocks now, mu-hah hahaha!
And Jeri's making a name for herself through her blog: www.jeriwesterson.typepad.com. She has great articles on the mystery genre and publishing as well as many interviews with popular authors. My (Steve's) favorite material is her medieval links! Such a wide treatment of medievalia makes it a great stopping place to satiate the thirst for academia!
5/10/07: Sookie Stackhouse keeps climbing the charts. Book #7, ALL TOGETHER DEAD, is set to appear at #6 on the NY Times bestseller list on May 20. This represents Charlaine Harris' third bestselling Sookie novel. Congratulations, Charlaine!
In other Charlaine news, this past weekend brought her signing tour to Washington DC. For your pleasure, we were able to score some photos from Sharron Tan (with our many thanks!) to share with you. Feel free to head on over to misc/charlaine.html and check out a few snaps. Enjoy.
4/27/07: We are extremely pleased to announce that French rights to Meyer Levin's COMPULSION and FRANKIE AND JOHNNY have been picked up by Phebus. Meyer Levin was considered an important figure in American and Jewish literature, and all things being cyclical, we hope that his time will come again. To read a short, yet fascinating biography on this literary icon, you can head over to: awfulagent.com/reviews/levin2.html. Enjoy!
4/20/07: Well folks, we're back from London Book Fair. I know it's been a few weeks since there's been an update, but that doesn't mean nothing has been happening. On the contrary, EVERYTHING has been happening! Here's a fast look:
So as you can see, we've got some great things happening this year. Mui Bueno! As the office gets situated with our return, there will be many more updates and a little more to say about what's been going on, so stay tuned. Same Bat-time, same Bat-channel.
4/2/07: Elizabeth Moon's COMMAND DECISION, the latest installment of the increasingly popular Vatta's War series, hit the New York Times extended best seller list at #31 for the week ending March 18. And now it's already in its 3rd hardcover printing! The book has scored a starred review from Kirkus, hopefully the first of many excellent reviews.
2/28/07: "Clark Ashton Smith was one of the three great contributors to the magazine Weird Tales (along with HP Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard, creator of Conan) -- and some would argue that he was the best of them all." That's the first line in the Washington Post Book World's (2/18/07) full page spread on Clark Ashton Smith and a slew of books reviving or hailing his work. Publishers Weekly (2/19/07) also favorably reviewed THE END OF THE STORY (Night Shade Books), edited by Scott Connors and Ron Hilger, which is one of the more recent titles bringing Smith's short fiction back into publication.
2/26/07: A big congrats to Elizabeth Moon and Jack Campbell. Moon's ENGAGING THE ENEMY and Campbell's THE LOST FLEET: FEARLESS have landed in the top five paperback SF titles on BookScan. Very sweet!
2/26/07: We've got more information on Elizabeth Moon's tour schedule for COMMAND DECISION this week. She'll be out on the west coast, at Powell's Books in Beaverton, OR; at Barnes & Noble in Salt Lake City, UT; in Berkley and San Francisco, CA; and at Mysterious Galaxy Bookstore in San Diego, CA. You can find more details about the tour at www.elizabethmoon.com/conventions.htm.
2/26/07: Boston's Pandemonium Books, one of the few remaining SF specialty shops is trying to recoup from a move taking three months. We hope the crisis has passed and that people will continue to support them. The store is advertising a shirt drive to help compensate. So head on over to their website, or better yet, their store, and check it out.
1/29/07: The Recorded Books edition of Charlaine Harris' DEFINITELY DEAD is a finalist for "the Audies" in the mystery category. Our deepest thanks and congratulations go out to Charlaine Harris, narrator Johanna Parker, Kathleen Gormley in their NY studio, and Troy Juliar at Recorded Books HQ for all of their great work and support. The winners of the Audies, awarded by the Audio Publishers Association, will be announced June 1, 2007.
1/17/07: 'Tis the Season. It's Award Season and it looks like a couple authors are getting an early start. The biggest news so far is that Tobias Buckell's debut novel, CRYSTAL RAIN, has made the preliminary ballot for the prestigious Nebula Award. Ten books were selected and that will be cut to five for the final ballot, after that, there can be only one. On top of that, the book is also selected as a finalist for the Romantic Times Award for Best Science Fiction novel.
Brandon Sanderson's MISTBORN is also a Romantic Times Award finalist, for Best Epic Fantasy. Last year, Brandon's ELANTRIS won the same category.
Congratulations, guys, and good luck!
1/17/07: Mark this date in your calendars: March 11th, 9pm. That's The Lifetime Channel's official air date for the 2 hour premier of "Blood Ties", the series based on Tanya Huff's popular "Blood" books. Be sure to check back often for further updates, and you can also check your local listings as March approaches. Less than two months away! Woo!
For Canada's CHUM TV, the 22 episode series will air in fall 2007.
And in October, while in Vancouver, JABberwocky's very own Steve Mancino got to visit the set of "Blood Ties". It was a thrilling "once in a lifetime" type of experience. He got to loiter around the shooting set with his client, Kat Richardson, and their friend (and driver) Rich ;) . The excitement on set was something tangible, especially when talking to Producer Adam Shully, who was very enthusiastic about what a series like the Blood books offers not only Canadian TV, but film in general. A huge thanks goes out to Paul McConvey at Kaleidoscope Ent. for putting it together and to Adam Shully for being so hospitable on set. We can't wait to see what the end result looks like!
The series is being produced by Kirk Shaw, Peter Mohan, and Adam Shully. And the three main characters are being played by Christina Cox, Dylan Neal, and Kyle Schmid. For further production information, check out Fireworks International (the foreign sales agent) at www.contentfilm.com/index.php/news/153.html.
1/10/07: "Best Books" galore! In addition to Charlaine Harris' GRAVE SURPRISE as one of The Globe and Mail's featured books of the year, some other JABberwocks were also graced with end of year honors.
Tobias Buckell's CRYSTAL RAIN was mentioned all over the place, given due honors. Bookgasm.com placed it in the Top 5 SF/F books of 2006; Ofblog ranks it as one of the best debuts; Clarkesworld calls it the Best First Novel; Krobinette marks it as a best SF read of 2006; SF Signal added it to their Best of 2006. You can check out the list and see for yourself at Tobias' website: www.tobiasbuckell.com/2007/01/01/end-of-year-book-lists/. Tobias has also gotten a big vote of confidence from Tor, which has just signed up three more novels in his Xenowealth series, and given him a sweet big-book embossed cover for the paperback edition of CRYSTAL RAIN, which comes out in June.
This week, Kirkus listed Kat Richardson's GREYWALKER as one of their Top 10 Best Books of 2006 in Science Fiction.
And finally, Charlaine Harris' GRAVE SURPRISE, the second novel in the Harper Connelly series, was featured in The Globe and Mail's "Books of the Year" issue on December 30th, 2006.
Woo-hoo! Congratulations to a great year (and to the rest of our clients)!
1/10/07: Simon Green's HELL TO PAY, the seventh installation of the increasingly popular "Nightside" series became an instant SF/F bestseller at B&N and Borders. This series is on fire and there's no putting it out!
1/10/07: Another big JABberwocky salute goes out to Brandon Sanderson who gets a second Medal of Honor. Over Christmas week in the Washington D.C. area he and Joshua visited 31 bookstores in two days, handselling nearly two dozen copies of his books. Brandon also had a great signing at the Dulles Borders, our thanks to everyone at the store for putting on a great event and making everyone feel welcome!
1/10/07: On a lighter note, Joshua boasted his best SCRABBLE game ever earlier this week. In his 554 point total, he scored killer points with 'amniote' for 80; 'bounties' for 74; 'za' for 64; 'ex'/'xi' for 52; and 'whip' for 45. And in the very next game...neither player topped 300.
10/25/06: Call it beginners luck as Kat Richardson's GREYWALKER is increasingly blowing away expectations. We knew the book was fantastic, but this is intense. Only two weeks into its official release, GREYWALKER is in its 3rd printing and has been showing some impressive numbers on Amazon and B&N.com. As for the ranking, well, at Barnes & Noble, the book is ranked #1 for their trade paper SF/F list for two weeks running. BookScan is also reporting that she's ranked #7 overall in the SF/F trade paper market, sitting loftily with some of the more mainstreamy novels, still two weeks running. Definitely a jaw-dropping moment! (And be sure to keep an eye out for updated reviews as they come in!) Congratulations, Kat.
And abroad, GREYWALKER is getting a fine reception. Chinese rights were scooped up by Spring International, and German rights went to Heyne before the book was even released. We're also looking at Russian rights being sold to AST.
On other Kat Richardson news, the cover art for the next book in the Greywalker series, POLTERGEIST, is in. It's added to the Cover Art Gallery. If you thought the cover for GREYWALKER was great, you haven't seen anything yet! It's hot, it's sexy, it's dark. Hats off to Chris McGrath! Enjoy!
10/25/06: And now for a pleasant surprise. Jack Campbell's first novel, DAUNTLESS, is now in its third printing after just a few months in bookstores. Congrats, Jack. May it soon see a fourth printing! (And FYI, it's got a great cover that's been added to the Cover Gallery!)
9/08/06: More DARK DELICACIES news. The Stoker Award Winner for Best Anthology, edited by Jeff Gelb and Del Howison, has just been picked up by the Berkeley Publishing Group for release in a mass market edition.
DARK DELICACIES is also going to have a special edition released by Cemetery Dance, which will be signed by most of the contributing authors.
9/08/06: Hats off to artist Stephan Martiniere whose cover illustration for Brandon Sanderson's ELANTRIS took home the Chesley Award!
9/06: Once again, Elizabeth Moon's THE SPEED OF DARK was selected for a major campus-wide reading event. Elizabeth will be visiting Ohio State University in mid-October as a part of OSU's "First Year Experience" program. For more details, check out OSU's webpage at: http://fye.osu.edu/Book/speed.html.
Y'know. Why didn't we get to have great books like this when we were in college?
Also, there is a very excellent interview/article on Elizabeth from Sallyport, Rice University's alumni magazine. Check it out at http://www.rice.edu/sallyport/2006/summer/features/moon.html.
6/06: There are more award winners on the JABberwocky homefront. Brandon Sanderson's debut, ELANTRIS, won the Romantic Times Reviewer Choice Award for Best Epic Fantasy. Charlaine Harris has also won the award for Best Amateur Sleuth in her first Harper Connelly mystery, GRAVE SIGHT. Congratulations, Brandon and Charlaine!
6/06: JABberwocky is delighted to announce that Edo van Belkom is the winner of the Silver Birch Award for his YA novel WOLF PACK. The Silver Birch is voted on by schoolchildren in Ontario, Canada, and is a major award in the province in which many thousands of students read the contending novels, and with the nominated authors making many school appearances across the province. The winner was announced American Idol style in a ceremony attended by thousands of children cheering for their favorite. Way to go, Edo!
5/24/06: Charlaine Harris just keeps getting better! DEFINITELY DEAD, the sixth book in her bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series, hit the New York Times Bestseller list at #8 for the week ending 5/6, and was three weeks on both the Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists, and got up to the #4 spot on the Wall St. Journal bestseller list. Congratulations, Charlaine!
In March, she broke she the language barrier. DEAD UNTIL DARK and LIVING DEAD IN DALLAS, have won a French award from LesRomantiques for BEST HEROINE.
Writer/Director Alan Ball (Six Feet Under, American Beauty) purchased the film option for the Sookie Stackhouse novels and is putting together an hour-long pilot for HBO. Ball was quoted in the trades as saying: "The books are funny, scary, sexy, romantic, bizarre and really fun. I couldn't put them down. I will try to remain as true to the spirit of her book as possibly."
HBO's president of entertainment, Carolyn Strauss, said, "I had always assumed that Alan was done with TV. I thought he was going to do movies, so we didn't even try. Then he read this book and said, 'I want to do this.' It was really a beautiful surprise."
It's been a big year so far, but there's always more to come!
5/06: More cover art treats! Just in is the finalized artwork for Jim Hines' GOBLIN QUEST, which will be released in mass market by DAW in early November. Go have a look here. Artist Mel Grant came up with some very excellent, very charming art work. And a big thank you to Mel and our friends at DAW for giving us permission to put this up on display.
The artwork arrived not too long after GOBLIN QUEST and it's sequel, GOBLIN HERO, sold to DAW. The Five Star edition of GOBLIN QUEST has garnered multiple foreign sales.
4/06: Woah! The finalized cover art for Kat Richardson's GREYWALKER is just in! Artist Chris McGrath did a tremendous job here, and Ray Lundgren put together a terrific design. You can check it out here. Our thanks go out to Chris, Ray, and Penguin/Roc for putting together a wonderful package and allowing us to show it off!

And now, Brandon Sanderson is a finalist for the prestigious John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer, 2005, based on his stellar debut novel, ELANTRIS. The winner will be announced Saturday, August 26th, during WorldCon's Hugo ceremony. Way to go, Brandon! We wish you the best!
3/06: Simon Green's lastest installment in the "Nightside" series, SHARPER THAN A SERPENT'S TOOTH, is off to a running start. Oue month into sales and the book is already a chart topper. It's ranked as the #2 fantasy according to BookScan. Barnes & Noble rates it as #3 on their SF/F list, and #26 overall in mass market. Those are some impressive rankings. Get 'em while they're hot!
3/06: A big congratulations goes out to Pari Noskin Taichert whose BÉLEN HITCH was just nominated for an Agatha Award for Best Novel. This makes Pari two-for-two so far. Her first novel, THE CLOVIS INCIDENT, was an Agatha finalist for Best First Novel, in 2005. The winner will be voted on at the big Malice Domestic convention, and announced on April 22.
01/06: The great reviews are coming in for Tobias Buckell's CRYSTAL RAIN. The book, which is just out from Tor, has so far recieved a starred review from Library Journay, a 4 1/2 starred review from Romantic Times, as well as stunning reviews from Publishers Weekly, SFF World, and a slew of fantastic blurbs from authors such as Karin Lowachee, Kevin J. Good luck, guys!
Check out the spectacular cover art for CRYSTAL RAIN by Todd Lockwood! Check it out here! We would also like to thank Tor and Todd Lockwood for permitting us post the teaser for your perusal. Even though CRYSTAL RAIN won't be published until February 2006, Tor's already snapped up a second novel by Tobias.
11/05: Tanya Huff's BLOOD DEBT has won the German Dracula Society Award for Best Translated Vampire Novel. Congratulations Tanya!
11/05: We would like to congratulate Edo van Belkom and WOLF PACK for being honored with a spot on the short list for the Silver Birch Award. The Silver Birch is one of many "Tree" themed awards in an Ontario-wide reading program. Students from all over the provincewill read and then vote on the titles selected, with the winner to be announced in April 2006. ((The Silver Birch is for grades 4-6.)) "I'm ecstatic," Edo said, "Award attention is always nice, but the Silver Birch means that countless students from all across Ontario will be reading my book, and for a writer that's reward enough by itself."
Edo has also won the Aurora Award for Best Long Form Work in English for his novel WOLF PACK. Congrats, Edo!
In 2006, Cutting Audio will be including Edo's "Mark Dalton" trucker adventure serials as bonus material to their Defiance Audio products.
09/05: A big JABberwocky salute goes to Brandon Sanderson, who gets our famed Medal of Honor. On July 18th, he accompanied Joshua to twenty bookstores in and around New York City introducing himself and autographing copies on hand of ELANTRIS. Sales spurted up in the week ahead!!! -- a limited number of signed copies are still on the shelves at Manhattan bookstores, but they are going fast. You might also find signed first edition copies of ELANTRIS at major bookstores in Virginia's DC suburbs, in the Seattle area, where Brandon visited many bookstores during NASFiC, and on the West Coast where Brandon recently signed at Borders in Eugene, OR and Torrance, CA; SF's Borderlands; and signed shelf stock at many other stores
Fantastic blurbs received for 28 year old Brandon Sanderson's debut novel ELANTRIS (Tor, May '05). It's now been taken by the Science Fiction Book Club, and has already sold in 11 foreign markets. Back on the homefront, the Tor hardcover of ELANTRIS is into a third printing!!!
